In retrospect we should have visited the Peace park on the second day because the weather was overcast with intermittent showers.
This would have been perfect weather for a jaunt around the small park and inside the Peace museum. Instead we rode the train and took a ferry out to Miyajima island.
This island is famous for a large Torii (red/orange gate) that appears to float in the water when the tide comes in. This wasn't the only thing that Miyajima is famous for but it's the most picturesque.
You can also find deer here. They say the deer will go for any paper you have, like maps or train tickets. We saw more than one person fall victim to a quick deer.
If you ask the locals they would say that Miyajima is famous for wooden rice spoons that look like paddles. They sold all manner of sizes in the souvenirs shops. Some even had decorative ones with inscriptions for good luck and what not. They even had a giant one.
The local delicacy was oyster. We had to stop and get some food so it was the perfect time to try.
Lana doesn't like oysters but like a good Japanese tourist she tried an oyster dish and said Oishii!
I declined and got myself a rice bowl with a pork cutlet on top. I should have taken a picture of my dish but then again, it would have looked like any other rice bowl you can get anywhere in Japan.
Miyajima has more than just that to keep you entertained! If you like the outdoors there is a cable car that will bring you to the top of the mountains and you can hike down. In these mountains there were some temples and onsens as well. We opted for the shorter hikes in town in between the Torii and shopping.
All in all we had a fairly full day and got lots of great pics and the girls got lots of souvenirs if pictures weren't enough.
