For a long time now, I have been trying out AnyDVD indefinitely. It did it's job well, but I have never been one to pay for software so I had to find a freeware equivalent. So I tried DVD43 which decrypts DVDs on the fly so that you can backup those DVDs that you bought. There is nothing worse than lending out good DVDs to someone and finding scratches on them upon return, and since I live in Japan (Region2) I need a decryptor to play my Canadian (Region1) DVDs. I also backup my DVDs so I can bring them around to other people's places for movie nights. Not everybody is skilled with PCs, and though hard to believe, not everyone has a PC or a region free DVD player.
Nero recode does a good job of converting commercial DVDs into DVDR (4.5G), but of course it is also very expensive. The copy of Nero I have is the OEM version that came with my burner and I didn't want to shell out $90 for something I could get for free. My research lead me to DVDShrink which is great because it's free.
If you have DVDs you need backuped you should try these utilities. The manufacturers can't legally host the software in the states so you have to use Google or Yahoo to find these gems.
