The day after the Rancher we had decided to split into two groups. Lana, Nadine and Jamie were going to USJ, as in Universal Studios Japan, and Monica and I were going to the Osaka Bay area.
The Osaka Bay area is host to two major attractions: the Tempozan and Osaka Aquarium. The Tempozan was the largest Ferris Wheel in the world when it was built, but now has been surpassed by many wheels in different countries as well as in Japan.
There is a shopping centre attached to the base of the wheel. We also had a walk through there peeking into shops willy nilly. The funny thing was that Monica was a little apprehensive about going up but I convinced her we should try it, even though I was scared of heights. In fact I had to sit on the floor of the cabin instead of on the seats to reduce my anxiety. The one good thing about being up so high was the excellent view. We got to see many things like the Osaka Kayukan or Aquarium.
The Osaka aquarium is a neat place with a few different tanks housing a variety of animals.
The cool thing about the Osaka Kayukan was that it had a bunch of tall tanks that spanned a few storeys. So the tour would start at the top of the building and spiral down.
It is very interesting to see how they managed to get the different groups of sea life to share the space. The height of the tanks allowed some segmentation by depth and the resulting layer effect was great.
Monica had a random connection with the Kayukan because one of the exhibits displayed animals from her home country of Panama. We had to get a picture of course.
After we made our way through the Kayukan we had to get something to eat. So we headed to the Tempozan Village Market to find some food. We randomly got some coupons for some stores and restaurants there so we made it our mission to use a coupon. With determination and Monica's hiragana and katakana reading ability we started our search.
After some fruitless but interesting results, like this oddly cheeky mannequin, we managed to stumble upon a cool little shopping area.
It was made to resemble the olden days of Japan with all the shops decorated with aged facades. We even managed to find a restaurant which would redeem a coupon!
